As the weather begins to warm up, we are reminded of all of the summer fun to come. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources wants to make sure all are ready to safely enjoy summer.

The DNR is offering free, monthly off-road vehicle safety classes at Silver Lake State Park one Saturday per month through October.

All classes will begin at 9:00 a.m. on the following Saturdays:

  • April 18 (Silver Lake State Park headquarters)
  • May 16 (Silver Lake State Park headquarters)
  • June 20 (Silver Lake State Park headquarters)
  • July 18 (Silver Lake State Park headquarters)
  • Aug. 1 (All Seasons Outdoor Show, Oceana County Fairgrounds)
  • Sept. 19 (Silver Lake State Park headquarters)
  • Oct. 17 (Silver Lake State Park headquarters)

“Our staff believes education is one of the best ways to keep everyone safe,” said Silver Lake State Park Supervisor Gregory Sherburn. “We are very excited to offer this opportunity and we look forward to building the park’s reputation as an ORV education destination.”

In Michigan, all riders under 16 years of age are required to complete an approved ORV safety course and carry the Michigan ORV safety certificate with them at all times while riding on public lands. Staff from Silver Lake State Park and Silver Lake Buggy Rental, as well as several ORV community members, will serve as instructors for these classes.

There is no charge to participate in the ORV safety classes, but a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to Silver Lake State Park.
