I'm sure all of us that have gone through raising kids remember a time when they were little, and that no matter what we did, they would not go down for a nap. Oh, the pain of it all!

Well, a local daycare in Caledonia, the Adventures Learning Center, was having the same issue and wanted to help the some little ones to nap. So, they used some Melatonin.

Hold on, Melatonin for small children to help them sleep?

This is just coming out now, and reported by WOODTV.

Melatonin is natural and is considered an aid to sleep, but for adults and not young children. The FDA hasn't approved that use.

WOODTV reported that doctors say that it is likely harmless, unless of course, a child may have asthma or another medical condition that would cause an adverse reaction.

So what is going on?

The daycare in Caledonia wasn't actually giving the children Melatonin. They were spraying a solution, Dr. Teal's Sleep Spray with melatonin and some essential oils, on some children's sleeping mats.

The daycare has cameras that stream a live feed so that parents can see whenever their kids are there and one of the parents noticed a worker spraying something onto three mats.

WOODTV reported a noted local pediatrician, who has now retired, Dr. Nick Kokx,  pointed out:

“It’s likely that it’s safe. There’s not a lot of studies recently with melatonin. Most have been some time ago and found effectiveness was not demonstrable. There’s a difference between (parents) using it in their own home and someone else — babysitter, nanny or day care — using it without their knowledge. I think parents do deserve from the people who are taking care of their children a sense that they are the person that controls the environment of their child — what they eat, drink and inhale."

A personal note, I certainly would trust Dr. Kokx. He was our family pediatrician for many years through four daughters.

In fairness to Adventures Learning Centers, when their administration learned about this they stopped the practice, removed it from the daycare and notified the State to confirm their actions.

FYI, my wife and I never did, or even thought about, spraying Melatonin on our kids beds in their young lives. Although.....come to think about it.....hmmmm!
