The Grand Rapids Press is reporting a pickup truck driver stuck in a traffic jam in Grand Rapids says a titanium plate in his nose kept him from being severely wounded or killed by the gunman who fatally shot seven people and took his own life.

Robert Poore said the man later identified as Rodrick Dantzler raised a gun and fired shots at Poore's truck Thursday afternoon. A bullet ricocheted off Poore's nose because of the titanium plate that was inserted during cancer treatment as a child, he told WOOD-TV.

Poore suffered minor injuries.

Police say the 34-year-old Dantzler killed himself with a single shot to the head late Thursday, ending a standoff. Authorities say Dantzler earlier embarked on an unexplained rampage in which he killed his daughter, an ex-girlfriend and five others.
