The first victim of the shooting spree that occurred in Kalamazoo February 20 is making improvements. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department told WZZM-13 on Wednesday that Carruthers has begun physical therapy.

Carruthers was shot several times outside of the the Meadows Townhomes, it has been reported that she put herself between the shooter and a group of children.

WZZM-13 reports that Carruthers was upgraded to fair condition on Tuesday evening.

Jason Dalton, the accused shooter, was in court Thursday for a probably cause hearing. Dalton's lawyer also requested a mental competency exam for his client.

His next court date is scheduled for May 10.
