We have known for quite some time that Joann would be liquidating close to 500 of their stores as they work through Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Well, the hammer is coming down on those stores, and sadly, Michigan will be hit hard.

Crain's Business, Crain's Grand Rapids, just reported that Joann's filed in court today, their plan to actually close 533 stores nationwide out of their 850 stores.

This will be hurting Michigan. Joann has 40 locations around the state and 33 will be closing.

WHAT ABOUT WEST MICHIGAN?

Seven Joann Stores in West Michigan are on the list. Crain's Grand Rapids says:

5240 Beckley Road, Suite M, Battle Creek
1800 M-139 Unit A, Benton Harbor
1250 Perry Ave., Big Rapids
3323 Century Center St. SW, Grandville
12635 Felch St. #60, Holland
5663 Harvey St., Norton Shores
6151 S Westnedge Ave., Portage

These stores are considered "underperforming" and not likely to be considered in a potential buyout.

As far as I can tell, that only leaves the Grand Rapids Joann store at CenterPoint Mall to remain open.

There is an ongoing battle between a well known liquidator and the company as they try to maintain value for the remaining properties.

Joann Interim CEO Michael Prendergast said, according to Crain's Grand Rapids:

“This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our thousands of Team Members, customers and all of the communities we serve. A careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the Company determined which stores should remain operating as usual at this time. Right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for Joann.”
