Unexpected! Will JC Penny Actually Close Grand Rapids Stores?
The retail business has certainly taken a hit these past several years. The pandemic hit them hard along with the growth of online shopping. Shoppers just aren't going into the brick and mortar stores as much as they used to.
I have been writing so much about store closings, Macy's, Auto Zone, etc., and now it's time to look at another large, nation wide department store, JCPenney's.

Over the past couple of years 158 JCPenney stores have closed, and the thought was will there be more over time or will this be it for awhile. They have added a few more closings this year, a couple in Texas and a couple in Ohio.
The company filed for bankruptcy in 2020 according the Newsbreak.com, and has been closing underperforming stores across the U.S. since then to streamline operations.
It had over 850 locations at the time of the Chapter 11 filing, with well over 100 shutdowns between 2020 and 2021.
It was expected that not many of JCPenney's anchor mall locations would shut down after the companies acquired it.
Here in Michigan we have lost at least seven stores, Greenville, Mt. Pleasant, Canton, Big Rapids, Owosso, Alpena and Bay City.
Penney hasn't said if there would be more Michigan closures so, as far as we can tell, the Woodland Mall, RiverTown Crossings and Muskegon department stores are safe for the time being.
