What Does The Blue Bucket Mean?

Dr. Anson Koshy shared the reasoning behind these colored buckets in an article for UT Physicians.

"The idea behind these colored pumpkins and buckets is rooted in a way to help families with children with all types of special health care needs navigate a night of trick-or-treating with a little less stress, and more patience and understanding."

During this spooky season, if you see a child carrying a blue or teal-colored pumpkin bucket, please keep in mind that the child may be autistic or have an allergy to a certain food.

These blue buckets allow everyone who is giving out candy this year to know that this child may not greet you or may not be able to have certain treats.

Sinclair Clarion shared that

"Teal buckets represent those with food allergies, meaning those who are giving out candy should consider using candy free of allergens, especially peanuts. Blue or dark blue buckets signify a child with autism."

However, there are more colors to recognize besides the blue buckets.

What Does The Other Colors Mean?

Besides blue, you may see a purple trick-or-treat bucket around the city as well.

A purple bucket could signify a child that has epilepsy so please be on alert.

If there is any epilepsy emergency, NHS shares what you should do.

  • only move them if they're in danger, such as near a busy road or hot cooker

  • cushion their head if they're on the ground

  • loosen any tight clothing around their neck, such as a collar or tie, to aid breathing

  • turn them on to their side after their convulsions stop – read more about the recovery position

  • stay with them and talk to them calmly until they recover

  • note the time the seizure starts and finishes"
