Being a parent is hard. Depending on life circumstances, someone may not be able to or ready to have a child. However, because of that reason, the baby may be given up in a dangerous situation.

According to National Safe Haven Alliance,

"every year infants are illegally abandoned in the U.S. In 2021, 31 babies were placed in dumpsters, found in backpacks, or discarded in other dangerous locations."

There is an organization that is helping to allow parents to safely surround their children.

Safe Haven Law

Michigan has its version of a safe haven law. It is called Safe Delivery.

"Safe Delivery is a law which allows a parent or parents to safely and legally surrender their newborn, no more than 3 days old. A newborn may be given to a uniformed employee who is inside and on duty at any hospital, fire department, police station, or to an emergency medical technician or paramedic by calling 9-1-1. The newborn will be placed for adoption."

The hotline for this is: 866-733-7733

Since its start in 2016, Safe Haven Baby Boxes has helped over 130 surrenders nationwide. There are 148 Safe Haven Baby Boxes in the country.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes says,

"A Baby Box is a safety device provided for under state's Safe Haven Law and legally permits a mother in crisis to safely, securely, and anonymously surrender if they are unable to care for their newborn. A Baby Box is installed in an exterior wall of a designated fire station or hospital. It has an exterior door that automatically locks upon the placement of a newborn inside the Baby Box, and an interior door that allows a medical staff member to secure the surrender newborn from inside the designated building."

There is also a hotline that gives women the chance to talk to trained professionals so they can surrender their babies safely.
