Some states have stiff laws in place that only allow dogs to be tethered outside for only 30 minutes when temperatures dip below 32 degrees or above 90 degrees. Those who violate that law could face up to a $15,000 fine or jail time.

Unfortunately, the law in Michigan is a bit more lax.

Currently, there are no laws in Michigan preventing owners from leaving dogs outside in extreme temperatures. However, if people leave their pets outdoors for any length of time, they are required by Michigan state law to provide them with adequate food, water, and shelter.

Under Michigan law, outdoor dogs must be provided with the shelter, food, and water they need to survive during the brutal Michigan winter. Unfortunately, many pet owners are unable to provide these life-saving necessities for their pets, especially in these tough economic times.

According to the Detroit Free Press, penalties, such as tickets or fines, are set at the local level. However, in Michigan, penalties generally call for 93 days in jail, fines, and community service.

You wouldn't leave your child tied to a tree in the middle of winter, so don't do it to your dog.
