While some are well-versed in the difference between these nine different species of squirrel, the rest are left wondering about the difference between an Eastern Gray Squirrel and a Southern Flying Squirrel.
Night Flight: Michigan’s Flying Squirrels
If you were unaware, yes, we do have flying squirrels in Michigan, but unfortunately, they aren't hanging around with a moose or wearing a flight helmet. Our state's flying squirrel population is nocturnal—so unless you're up late and looking up, chances are you haven't seen one.

The Mystery of Black Squirrels
One type of squirrel that you have seen (while not a unique species) is the black squirrel. Michigan is one of the best states for spotting black squirrels, thanks in large part to Dr. Kellogg, who enjoyed their antics and reportedly had them shipped in from England so he could continue to giggle at these rodents.
One thing all of Michigan's squirrel species have in common is their behavior. They're either napping, foraging, warning, and moving their stash from one hole or tree to another.
