Three Michigan inmate deaths in less than a month at the state's only women's prison have lawmakers, families, and advocates asking for answers. The latest death occurred on June 6, 2026, at the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility (WHV) near Ypsilanti.

According to the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC), 36-year-old Ashley Hoath died after being transferred from the prison's medical unit to a local hospital. ClickOnDetroit reports the MDOC says she reported feeling unwell, was evaluated by medical staff, and was responsive when she left the facility by ambulance.

Hoath's death follows the deaths of 28-year-old Khaira Howard on May 14 and 57-year-old Rebecca Fackler on May 17. The cause of all three deaths remains under investigation, according to MLive.

For many families, this is where the frustration begins. Three women have died in less than four weeks, and loved ones are waiting for answers.

MDOC Director Heidi Washington told the Detroit News that the department is conducting aggressive investigations into all three deaths. Washington urges the public to avoid speculation until all the facts are known. Additional healthcare workers have been assigned to the Huron Valley Women's Correctional Facility while the investigations continue.

The deaths have intensified concerns about conditions inside the facility, a place the public rarely gets a glimpse of. Lawmakers have called for greater transparency and accountability. Families, advocates, and attorneys have also raised concerns about medical care, with some pushing for independent reviews and additional oversight.

For now, investigators are working to determine exactly what happened to cause the death of three inmates in one facility in less than a month. Until those findings are released, the questions about the safety of Michigan's only women's prison will continue to grow.
