Buying a first home in Michigan now requires savings, patience, and the ability to remain calm while Zillow shows you a $240,000 house with carpeting in the bathroom. Fortunately, four Michigan cities still give buyers a fighting chance of finding their perfect first home.

WalletHub compared 300 cities using affordability, real estate market conditions, and quality of life. Flint ranks first in America for affordability, followed by Detroit at 4, Warren at number 13, and Livonia at 16. That gives Michigan four cities among America's 20 most affordable rental and housing markets for first-time buyers.

Affordable Michigan Housing Has Some Fine Print

Before loading the moving truck, affordability was not the only category measured. While it may be the easiest city in the country on the wallet, Flint ranked 286th for quality of life; Detroit ranked 299th; Warren finished 210th; and Livonia ranked 208th. In other words, every Michigan city on the affordable top 20 fished outside the top 200 for quality of life.

The overall rankings tell a similar story. Flint placed 42nd overall, Warren ranked 74th, Livonia came in 105th, and Detroit finished 169th. So while a manageable house payment is great, so are good schools, safety, employment, and everything waiting outside the front door.
