A former mental health professional with the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is facing serious allegations after prosecutors say she engaged in an inappropriate relationship with an inmate under her care in a Jackson, Michigan, prison.

The Allegations and Arraignment

According to Jackson County Prosecutor Kelsey Guernsey’s press release, Rene Nelson has been arraigned on one count of Criminal Sexual Conduct in the Second Degree, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

The arraignment was held before Magistrate Christopher Dickerson, who set a $2,500 cash bond. Nelson had already been placed on unpaid leave by the MDOC before the arraignment. Her leave began shortly after the alleged incident, which prosecutors say happened during the course of her duties inside the corrections system.

Upcoming Probable Cause Hearing

The case now moves to its next stage, with a Probable Cause Conference scheduled for September 12, 2025, before Judge Daniel Goostrey. That hearing will determine if enough evidence exists for the case to proceed to trial.
