For 8-year-old Steve, getting in and out of his house hasn’t been easy lately. While he waits for a new prosthetic leg, everyday tasks like climbing the front steps have become a challenge.

He’s on Medicaid and can only get a new leg every 5 years with his insurance, so trying to get a replacement has been a challenge. But thanks to a powerful act of kindness from a local grocery store chain, Steve’s journey is about to get a little bit easier.

SpartanNash (Aka the parent company of D&W Fresh Market and Family Fare) was moved after coming across Steve’s GoFundMe page seeking help with getting a replacement prosthetic.

Inspired by his story and the obstacles he’s facing, the company decided to step in and help build him a brand new ramp to give him easier access to his home.

And here’s the amazing twist: the ramp is being made from recycled plastic bags collected right here in West Michigan. Through a partnership with Trex, plastic bags donated at their stores have been turned into deck boards to help build a ramp for Steve.

Steve’s family is beyond grateful for the support, especially as they prepare for what’s next. Since his current prosthetic is broken, and the next step involves a five-day trip to Shriners Hospital in Chicago to get a better-fitting leg later this month according to their GoFundMe page.

Unfortunately, Michigan Medicaid only covers a new prosthetic every five years, so the trip and related costs fall on the family’s shoulders.

How can I help Steve and his family?

Steve’s GoFundMe page is still active, and every donation helps cover travel costs and accommodations while they’re in Chicago later this month. You can help Steve get back on his feet (literally) by donating here.
