Major Grand Rapids Bridge Over US-131 Closing for Months for Rebuild

Spring is almost here, and spring in Michigan means one thing: construction season begins. One busy overpass in Grand Rapids will undergo construction this season and will be closed for up to nine months.

M.L.K., Jr. St. Bridge Over 131 Set to Close for Construction

According to MDOT, the project will replace and rebuild a 700-foot-long section of the Martin Luther King St. bridge over 131.

MDOT says that that portion of the bridge still contains some of the original components that were used when it was constructed back in the 1920s.

In addition to the bridge closure, the northbound on and off ramps to US-131 will also be closed. The southbound on and off ramps will remain open.

The project is expected to cost $30 million to complete.

When Will Martin Luther King Jr. St. Over 131 in Grand Rapids Close?

The bridge is slated to be closed starting March 2, 2026. If all goes to plan, the eastern section of the bridge will be demolished in early April. (The western section will not undergo construction as it was rebuilt in the 1950s.)

Suggested Detours During the Martin Luther King Jr. St. Closure

MDOT suggests that passenger vehicles detour using Division Ave., Hall St., and Century Ave. Pedestrians are encouraged to use the "existing sidewalk network" to Hall St. Bicyclists are encouraged to detour on Ionia Ave., Cherry St., and Century Ave.
