3 Michigan Friends Planning a Simple Day Trip Just Walked Right into Meijer Gardens History

Three women from the East side of Michigan had the ultimate surprise on Wednesday when they walked through the doors at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

Judi D, Judy K, and Andrea S. from South Lyon have been trying to plan a trip together to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park but bad weather and scheduling issues prevented the three from making it happen.

When the trio finally walked through the doors, they were greeted with a celebration as the park's 17 millionth visitors.

Charles Burke, President & CEO of Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park talked about the big milestone.

"Welcoming our 17 millionth guest is a remarkable milestone that speaks to the enduring vision of Fred and Lena Meijer and the continued support of our members, donors, volunteers, staff and community."

The lucky ladies were each given a special gift basket as well as free tickets to the park and all of its exhibits.

When Was Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park Built?

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park opened in April 1995 with the goal of becoming a major cultural destination that combined world-class art, horticulture, and nature in West Michigan.

For over ten years before the park opened, there was a huge push by the West Michigan Horticultural Society to build a public botanical garden and conservatory.

When Fred and Lena Meijer stepped in to help make this happen, they offered over 70 acres of land, financial backing, and Fred's private collection of outdoor bronze sculptures.

What an awesome story and a great reminder of how lucky we are to have this amazing gem right here in our backyard.
