Victim of Vicious Grand Rapids Assault Fights for Recovery

The Grand Rapids Police Department says that a man was severely beaten by a group of teenagers and left in the street.

The teens then went to the victims house and robbed him and stole his car

Todd Johnsons injuries were so severe that he needed to have emergency surgery for a brain injury and was in intensive care for a week.

He's now in a rehabilitation facility and could have a very long road ahead.

Johnsons sister shared a GoFundMe Page that had been setup to help with his medical expense and to explain what happened.

My name is JJ Johnson, and I’m Todd’s sister. Todd was violently assaulted and robbed on August 16, 2025, by six teenagers. Todd was in the ICU until this Monday, and is now in rehab, and will be for weeks, if not months, due to his severe traumatic brain injury from the violent assault.

He has aphasia, which is a speech disorder where he says the wrong word, such as square instead of cherries. We do not know yet if his aphasia will be permanent. We do not even know yet if Todd will be able to live and work independently.

The investigation is currently ongoing with 4 suspects taken into custody, One of them has been charged as a juvenile, which has people upset that these teens may not face serious consequences for the attack.

Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker shared with News 8 why the teens are currently not being charged as adults.

“As of now with the investigation ongoing, I cannot charge them as an adult, so the charges we filed are juveniles. It is a horrible incident, but I cannot just do things because I want to. I have to follow the law and right now, the law doesn’t allow me to charge anybody as an adult. But we will definitely examine that … when we get the full picture.”

My thoughts are with Todd Johnson and his family during this unimaginable time.

I hope that he can make a full recovery and return to life before the horrendous attack.
