People in Michigan are used to snow and ice but sometimes like earlier this year,

That's what happened back in March when an ice storm severely devastated northern Michigan, leaving hundreds of thousands without power, and damaging over 900,000 acres of forest.

After the damage was assessed Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer made a request for more federal funding to help with disaster relief and just got back some disappointing news.

Michigan’s appeal for additional federal disaster aid after the March 2025 ice storm has been officially denied by FEMA.

The agency concluded that the damage, though widespread, did not meet the threshold of “severity and magnitude” required for Individual Assistance or additional utility repair funding.

What Kind of Aid Was Michigan Seeking

Michigan’s appeal sought aid under three main programs:

Individual Assistance: This appeal would have helped residents with home and property losses and was denied.

Public Assistance: This appeal would have helped with repairs to damaged electrical infrastructure and was denied as well.

Hazard Mitigation Grant Program: This appeal would help with funds for projects reducing future risk and is still currently under review.​

President Trump approved an earlier disaster declaration in July 2025, that authorization only covered limited emergency work and repairs, not assistance for homeowners or private utilities.
