Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns Has New Fight in Court

Legendary boxer Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns once fought all is battles in the ring. As of late, the battles have been among family members in a court of law.

In the 1980s, Detroit’s most notorious and celebrated fighter was boxer Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns, best remembered for his legendary clashes with fellow boxing icon Sugar Ray Leonard.

Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard faced each other twice in their storied professional boxing careers. Their first encounter, in 1981, ended with Leonard winning by a 14th-round TKO, while their 1989 rematch concluded in a contentious draw. Both bouts are widely regarded as some of the greatest fights in boxing history.

Over the course of his 67-fight career, Thomas Hearns claimed 61 victories, 48 of them by knockout, suffered 5 losses, and recorded 1 draw. He captured world titles in five different weight divisions, welterweight, light middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight, and light heavyweight, and also held both WBC and WBA championships.

Boxing Legend Thomas Hearns Battles New Court Case

Now 67, Thomas Hearns has long retired from the boxing ring and resides in Southfield, Michigan, with his eldest son. Outside the ring, he faces new challenges, including financial struggles and health-related issues.

Over the past year, Hearns has faced significant hardships, including losing his longtime home to tax foreclosure and being diagnosed with early-stage dementia. Concerned that he might be vulnerable to exploitation, his family became embroiled in a court dispute among his siblings.

According to WXYZ-TV, an Oakland County Chief Probate Judge Pro Tem Daniel O'Brien granted Hearns' oldest son, Ronald Hears sole guardian and conservator for his father. In a recent interview with Thomas Hearns he said, "I want the world to know that I'm doing fine. I feel good. I just want things to just be calm and good, and just move smoothly."
