The RoboCop statue is finally up in downtown Detroit. Several Michiganders recently made suggestions on what Grand Rapids version of the RoboCop statue should be.

While all the RoboCop movies are set in a futuristic Detroit, The original 1987 film, its sequel in 1990, and RoboCop 3 in 1993, were primarily filmed in Dallas, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia, respectively using industrial areas to stand in for Detroit. The RoboCop film made in 2014 did incorporate some filming in Detroit.

Oddly enough, the Detroit Robocop statue started as a viral joke in 2011 suggesting the cyborg cop become a city ambassador. A Kickstarter campaign raised over $67,000 to build the statue. It took 15 years to make the statue a reality and now it's installed in the Eastern Market of Detroit.

Now that Detroit has its RoboCop statue, folks in West Michigan have been pondering what statue should go up in Grand Rapids. I am unaware of a movie that was made or based in Grand Rapids that had a standout character like RoboCop.

The most famous movie with ties to Grand Rapids is the Polar Express where Tom Hanks played the conductor on the train. So Tom Hanks dressed up as the conductor he played in the animated series would be my pick for a statue in Grand Rapids.

A poster on the Grand Rapids Reddit page suggested that a statue of Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise be erected in Grand Rapids. Nearly every poster on the Reddit thread got behind the idea. One even suggested setting up a Kickstarter like people did for the Robocop statue.
