Like most kids my dreams of becoming an NBA star were short-lived and I moved on but other kids moved on to college teams in hopes of getting into the NBA draft.

The most well-known player to go to the NBA and come from a Michigan college is Magic Johnson who played for Michigan State. There are many other greats like Grand Rapids' own Devin Booker who when on to play with the Phoenix Suns. Booker even won a gold medal for Team USA during the 2021 Olympics. There are lots more players who played at Michigan schools who did make it to the NBA but there are many talented basketball players who were passed in the draft or never played college ball to get noticed but are unbelievably talented in a pickup game at the local gym or park.

According to the Grand Rapids Gold website, open tryouts for the Grand Rapids Gold are Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 9 am to Noon at MSA Woodland. The Gold is an affiliate of the Denver Nuggets so if you make the team you are getting noticed by the NBA.
