Meet The Michigan Natives Who Have Played In The Men’s World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, has been a certified hit. Stadiums across the continent have brought millions of soccer fans from here and abroad to one of the 16 host cities, resulting in many foreigners discovering very random parts of US life that they find very exciting.

But what is possibly spurring the most excitement is simply how good Team USA looks. The squad put on a show against Paraguay with a 4-1 win, putting the world on watch that the US can compete and is looking to make a name for itself as the host nation.

But in Michigan, there's a twinge of bittersweetness to it all. On the current US Men's squad, no one is from Michigan. But that doesn't mean the US hasn't had players on the national team; in fact, not only has there been #, but one of them is a superstar who is still highly involved in World Cup broadcasting.
Michigan's Unique FIFA World Cup History
Even though Michigan doesn't have its own professional soccer team, it doesn't mean it hasn't become part of World Cup history. During the 1994 World Cup, the first hosted in the U.S., the games played at the former Pontiac Silverdome were the first ever to be played indoors in World Cup history. This photo shows Team USA playing against Switzerland in their opening match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Now, let's learn about some of the players from Michigan who have made a name for themselves on the pitch.
