Known for its Lake Superior shoreline, old-growth forests, and 90+ miles of trails, it showcases the state’s reputation for exceptional wilderness experiences.

9 Michigan Parks and Campgrounds Set for Big Improvements

According to MLive, several state parks and campgrounds will be under construction this summer. Before planning your next visit, be sure to review the list below, as some locations may be temporarily closed during the 2026 season.

  • Holly Recreation Area - Beach, swim, and boating access at Heron Lake is closed through October 2026. Campground is open.
  • Mears State Park - Campground closed through May 20.
  • Muskegon State Park - Major construction will have most of the park's features closed until late spring or early summer. The Muskegon lake Channel walkway and adjacent parking lot closed through August 2026.
  • Petosky State Park - The entire park except shoreline closed through at least May 15. 
  • Pontiac Lake Recreation Area - Campground closed until September 1.
  • Otsego Lake State Park - Campground is closed through June.
  • Tahquamenon Falls State Park - Upper Falls boardwalk closed until sometime this spring.
  • Traverse City State Park - The campground will be closed until April 2027. Beach access remains open but there will be temporary closures throughout the season.
  • Van Buren State Park - The park will no reopen until late spring.

With over 1,000 campgrounds and over 100 state parks, visitors will have no trouble finding a destination this summer.
