I have always been fascinated by tornadoes, having grown up watching Stormchasers on the Discovery Channel. I practically worshipped Reed Timmer (a Grand Rapids native!) and his insane tank-like car that could withstand a tornado going over the top of it. Tornadoes could happen here in Michigan, but they always felt like a far-off issue since Tornado Alley was so far south.

But in recent years, tornadoes have become increasingly common here in the Mitten State, and many now believe Michigan could be home to the new Tornado Alley. Things have been tense, with last year ranking third all time for Michigan's busiest tornado seasons, buoyed by two massive storms that created 14 and 12 tornadoes, respectively.

Those are high numbers, but they are the highest amount ever produced in a single day. That record was set in 2001 during an especially bad outbreak that produced 19 tornadoes in one night.

2001 Tornado Outbreak: Michigan's Most Prolific Storm

On May 21st, 2001, a massive storm system moved across much of the US from Louisiana to Michigan. While the southern states reported only hail and wind, Michigan and Ohio saw much more severe weather. Ohio reported two tornadoes, but that paled in comparison to the 19 tornadoes that spread from West Michigan to East Michigan.

According to Bill Steffen, former Chief Meteorologist Emeritus at WOODTV, the tornadoes included two EF2 tornadoes, 4 EF1 tornadoes, and 13 EF0 tornadoes, with tornadoes landing in 10 different counties. These storms reportedly came from a warm front moving through Indiana.

The next-highest number of tornadoes in a single day is 15, with a three-way tie for 1991, 1992, and 1997. If this trend continues, these types of storms could become more commonplace.
