Penalty for Smuggling Contraband into Michigan Prisons
Although smuggling drugs into a Michigan prison is a serious felony, every few months someone is accused of trying to do just that. A person smuggling drugs can be charged with possession with intent to deliver, with penalties ranging from 4 years to life in prison. Penalties can be even more severe depending on the type and amount of the substance involved.
The Michigan Department of Corrections implemented strict policies, including photocopying all inmate mail, to combat the smuggling of synthetic drugs. There are penalties for smuggling alcohol or weapons, but penalties are far harsher for hard drugs.
