What is a 'Legal Pit'?

A "legal pit" is a legal environment (sometimes called a "drift pit" or a "burnout pit") where cars can do things like burnouts and donuts in a safe, controlled environment (instead of on city streets or in intersections).

The purpose is for the events to be safer for the drivers and help them avoid danger to others who are not participating.

Not all events featuring burnouts and donuts are illegal; there are also sanctioned professional competitions held at tracks around the world ("legal pits"). According to MLive, a private drifting event called King of the Pit took place at Jackson Speedway on April 18. During the event, one driver got too close to the crowd, lost control, and ended up hitting a spectator, whose clothing then caught fire.

No arrests were made, and it is still unclear whether the man sustained injuries after his pants caught fire. The video below shows how frightening the situation was for spectators, as others rushed in to help extinguish the flames on his clothing.
