You’d assume that with marijuana legal to buy and cultivate in Michigan, illegal grow operations would be a thing of the past. Yet authorities just uncovered and shut down a major illicit growing operation.

In Michigan, adults 21 and older may grow up to 12 marijuana plants at their residence for personal recreational use. The 12-plant limit applies per household, no matter how many eligible adults live in the home.

There are several rules for growing marijuana at home. The plants must be kept in an enclosed, locked, and secure area, and they cannot be visible to the naked eye from any public place or from neighboring properties.

In Michigan, you can legally keep up to 10 ounces of marijuana at home. However, any amount over 2.5 ounces must be stored in a locked container.

If you’re planning to open and operate a large-scale cannabis grow facility in Michigan, you must complete a rigorous two-step state licensing process overseen by the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency, along with obtaining approval from the local municipality.

Most large operations require a Class C Grower license, which permits the cultivation of up to 2,000 marijuana plants.

Despite two legal growing avenues for growing marijuana in Michigan, it would seem unnecessary to try cultivating cannabis illegally, yet some individuals still choose to do so.

According to WXYZ-TV, the Michigan State Police seized drugs, cash, jewelry, and firearms after shutting down a large-scale marijuana grow operation last Friday. Authorities said the industrial building contained multiple grow rooms equipped with irrigation systems, surveillance cameras, and even a dedicated clone room.

The Michigan State Police confiscated more than 11,000 marijuana plants, 41 pounds of dried cannabis flower, eight firearms, Rolex watches, other high-value jewelry, and $146,000 in cash.

Authorities raided three locations in Detroit linked to this multi-million-dollar operation, but have not yet identified the individuals responsible. The investigation is still ongoing.
