When most people hear fishing tournaments what immediately comes to mind are a ton of high-tech boats with fishermen logoed up like NASCAR drivers heading to their spots going 90 mph across the lake.

Fishing tournaments were originally called fishing derby but both come in all shapes and sizes. Most tournaments are like the one mentioned above but there are other tournaments from people fishing from shore in lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, and even on the ice.

As with most all fishing tournaments, there is either prize money, prizes, or both involved but there is one tournament that benefits people right here in West Michigan.

The Big Red Classic Fishing Tournament got its original start back in 1991 with it was called The Big Dutchmen Classic. Sponsorship changes and tournament growth has led to several changes over the years like the name being changed in 2007 to the Big Red Classic.

One thing that has remained constant with the fishing tournament since its inception is the location at Yacht Basin Marina on the north side of Lake Macatawa in Holland.

Since the beginning of the fishing tournaments being held in Holland in 1991, there has been some sort of charity involved whether it was donating fish caught to the Resthaven Fish Boil to a Holland retirement home or contributions to the Boys and Girls Club of Western Michigan.

It was in 2008 that a new ladies' tournament was added to the Big Red Classic that was originally called "Save the Ta Tas Tournament" to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.

The Big Red Classic's Women's Ta-Ta Tournament is going Friday, August 4 from 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with all proceeds benefiting the Holland Hospital's Breast Care Fund.
