In my book, once you can comfortably pick apples at an apple orchard, autumn is here, and every fall activity is fair game. This is why many corn mazes, both haunted and non-haunted, open in early September and run until mid-November. Grand Rapids and much of West Michigan have no shortage of corn fields primed for being turned into a maze.

Some corn fields make mazes that look like, well, a maze, while others turn the cornfield into a giant canvas and create nothing short of art in the field. Last year, Choice Market Farm allowed you to walk through Dan Campbell's faceso the bar is set pretty high this year. Whatever type of maze you're looking for, it's out there somewhere, and we're here to help you find it.

The History of Corn Mazes

While mazes have been around since the Ancient Greeks told tales of Theseus and the Minotaur, corn mazes are a relatively new concept. The first corn maze was made in Annville, Pennsylvania, in 1993 and was 126,000 square feet. It was titled "The Amazing Maize Maze" and workers manually pulled the stalks to create the design of Cornelius the Cobasaurus.
