Delicious Sweet Snack Recalled In Michigan and Other States

Trader Joe's has been in the news for the past couple of weeks due to a couple of recalls, their cookies and falafel have been cited to have rocks in them and the soup had bugs. Well, they aren't the only ones making the headlines for a product that needs to come off the shelves and be thrown away.

Now, this recall is a little bit different than the ones that Trader Joe's was dealing with, as this is more about mycotoxin than the actual item itself. This is something that anyone can be affected by as the toxin is produced by several molds, although it affects apples more than any other food item. Many parents may want to check the pantry to make sure they aren't putting the household in danger.

What Is Patulin?

Patulin is the mycotoxin that is causing all of this to be an issue. Patulin is often produced from molds such as but not limited to Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Byssochlamys and is often found in rotting apples and other apple products. When ingested by humans it often causes nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances, and vomiting.

What Apple Product Is Being Recalled?

Mott's is the company that's in hot water here but not for all of their products. I know right, that doesn't make sense to me either, if one of their apple products is being recalled shouldn't they all be? I'm not sure how it works but I would be weary of all Mott's apple products.

Anyway, the exact product in question is the Motts no sugar added 3.9 oz Applesauce 6-packs. This order of applesauce was sent out to Michigan and 24 other states as well including Massachusetts, Alaska, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Future Apple Product & Patulin

This specific recall doesn't speak on apples, sliced or whole, or any apple juice so that does provide some relief, but that doesn't mean this can't happen at another time. Always keep this in mind when purchasing apple food products and be on the look for mold or foul smells.

If you have any of these products return them for a full refund or just throw them in the garbage but whatever you do, don't eat them.
