As we approach summer we sure don't want to think about the snow and ice winter brings. Slippery driving and walking are a real pain. But, in downtown Grand Rapids a real upgrade is happening.

A heated street and sidewalks are appearing. Certainly nothing new, but in Grand Rapids, especially downtown, it is unique.

That is why so many people are wondering what is going on downtown according to a Reddit post thread.

This heated street installation is the extension of Lyon Street, and runs past the Amway Grand Plaza and Ruth's Chris restaurant to the Welsh Auditorium facade which is another entrance to DeVos Place, and also an entrance to the underground parking ramp for both the convention center and DeVos Performance Hall.

It does make a lot of sense to have the heated street extension and sidewalks there. Pedestrians and moving through there all the time and with the new plaza being added, cold, snowy weather would detour people from wanting to enjoy the river front.

It's certainly not that strange in West Michigan since downtown Holland, for one, has had heated streets and sidewalks for several years now, and strolling through downtown Holland is a pleasure in the cold and snowy winter months.

Grand Haven and Muskegon stand out as two cities that should consider at least  installing heated sidewalks. Winter is a pretty dead time in their downtowns.

Think about all the cost of clearing this Grand Rapids area of snow in the winter, with people slipping and sliding, not fun. So, it sure will make this a much safer area and connecting to the rest of the heated sidewalks around the Grand Plaza.

It looks as if winter will be a little more pleasant in downtown Grand Rapids.
