Did You Know GVSU Women’s Basketball Team Are National Champs?
Over the weekend all of us were pulling for Michigan State and Michigan for a chance to bring home a national championship. Sadly, though, Michigan lost to Auburn in the Elite Eight, missing out on making the Final Four. Michigan had lost earlier in the Sweet 16, also to Auburn. Disgusting!
However, flying under the radar was the Grand Valley State University women's basketball team going for the Division II national title.
👇BELOW: SURPRISE! THESE FAMOUS PEOPLE WERE COLLEGE ATHLETES! 👇
THEY DID IT! The Grand Valley State University women's basketball team won the Division II National Championship!
Thomas Chavez wrote in the GV Next News from Grand Valley State University:
"The GVSU women's basketball team cemented its place in the history books on Friday after defeating the California State Dominguez-Hills Toros in the Division II Tournament Championship.
The 70-58 victory marks the second national championship in program history, the last coming in 2006."
The lady Lakers had a phenomenal year, according to gvsu.com/news.
They ended their championship season at 38-2, won the GLIAC regular season and tournament titles, then the Midwest Regional title. 37 of the wins were by double-digits, and they led the country in scoring margin at 30.3.
What a team and what a group of fine student athletes. We can't forget that as good as they are on the court, they have to be just as good in the classroom. They are working on their degrees and looking forward to their future careers.
But wait, there's more. Other Grand Valley State teams were shining on the national stage as well.
GVSU.edu/gvnext reported the Division II National Championships were held in Indianapolis in track & field with the men earning national runner-up honors and the women placing third.
And in swimming, the men’s team placed fourth while the women’s team finished eighth.
What a sports season for GVSU! Go Lakers!
