GVSU Women Win NCAA Division II Soccer Title

The Lakers' dominance of women's D2 soccer continues as they take their seventh National Title in 12 seasons.

Kennedy Bearden scored the game winning goal in double overtime to propel the Lakers past St. Rose College of New York, 3-2, to earn that championship at the Division II National Finals Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs, CO.

There was an awkward moment following Bearden's goal, as the officials needed to review the play on instant replay before declaring it good.

The officials had earlier disallowed a Laker goal in the first overtime period.

Here's a look at the celebration that kicked off once the goal was declared good.

The Lakers won the title with a new coach, Jim Conlan, who came from St. Louis, MO to take the job after last season's coach, Jeff Hosler moved on to Michigan State.

The Lakers finished the season with a record of 24-1-2. Their only loss came at the hands of arch rival Ferris State. Ferris was eliminated in the regional round by Saginaw Valley, who in turn lost the regional title game to the Lakers.

Bearden opened the scoring for GVSU at the five minute mark of the first half. Cecilia Steinwascher then put the Lakers up, 2-1, in the second half after St. Rose had tied it.

St. Rose scored again in the 78th minute, which would eventually send the game into overtime, leading to Bearden's sudden death heroics.

Speaking of Ferris State, the the Bulldogs' football team advanced to the Division II National Title Game Saturday in Texas, by burying Shepherd University at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids this past weekend, 55-7.

The Dogs will face Valdosta State out of Georgia in McKinney TX Saturday, December 19 at 9:00pm.

The two teams met for the 2018 title, and Valdosta Won in thriller, 49-47.
