Top Grocery Chain Laying Off Workers. What About Michigan?
Meijer, SpartanNash, household names in the grocery industry here in West Michigan. They are a major employer here in West Michigan and in areas they serve around the country.
But, as we have been seeing around the country, businesses are "right sizing" so to speak, and trimming staff.

That said, it doesn't seem as if Meijer or SpartanNash are doing staff adjustments so we can seemingly breath a sigh of relief.
However, there is one grocer that is "right sizing" and laying off folks, and they happen to be the largest grocery chain in America.
Kroger, the largest grocery only chain, with over 400,000 employees, has announced layoffs affecting stores across the country including here in Michigan.
The good news-bad news here is we don't have any Kroger stores in West Michigan. With the dominance of Meijer and SpartanNash along with others like Walmart, Kroger couldn't make a profitable go of it over here.
But, from Lansing east, Kroger has 120 groceries in 82 cities. and the layoffs will certainly make a dent.
As Meijer did in 2017, it looks as if Kroger is trimming down their IT and data department.
Supermarket News published that:
It’s been a little more than a month since Kroger internally announced plans to cut some 200 corporate employees at its Cincinnati headquarters, and it appears the grocery giant isn’t done yet.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reported on Thursday that the pure-play grocery chain has gone for another round, confirming to the newspaper that it has laid off more corporate workers and members of its data analysis arm and engineering team, 84.51°.
Our sister station, 97.3 The Dawg, reported that there is some speculation that the Kroger cuts are coming due to one or two things, one being the failed Kroger merger with Albertsons, which happened earlier this year. Or it could be that Kroger just ousted their longtime CEO, Rodney McMullen, on March 3, and hired a new one, and that the new CEO is likely doing some cleanup.
How all of this affects Michigan workers is still up in the air.
