A fire that damaged the old railroad bridge along the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail in Greenville appears to have been intentionally set.

The Greenville Daily News is reporting that the fire is under investigation for being 'suspicious'.

“A railroad trestle does not just spontaneously combust, so at this point, it’s suspicious," Greenville Public Safety Director Dennis Magirl told the Daily News.

The trestle had been converted for hikers on the Heartland Trail, a popular trail that winds along the Flat River in Greenville.

Magirl says they have to rule out whether a lightning strike during Thursday's storms set the fire. Accelerant-detecting dogs will be on the scene Friday to aid in the investigation.

The good news? According to WZZM-13, the bridge is not a total loss, as the old heavy timber held tight, and remains intact.
