Grand Rapids police were called to the city's west side Wednesday afternoon after receiving a report that an older white man had urinated on a 5-year-old girl and shouted racial slurs at her.

The incident occurred in an alley off of Leonard Street west of Alpine.

After speaking with the girl, police also talked to three witnesses - two 7-year-olds and another 5-year-old. The witnesses said that the man urinated on the girl and called her the "N" word. The victim is black.

After getting a description of the man, police canvassed the neighborhood and identified a suspect. The man was not home when they went to speak to him, but police were called some time later by a neighbor who told them that the man had returned home. Police returned to the residence and the man was taken into custody without incident.

The Detective Unit - Family Services Team is investigating the incident. In addition, the Family Services Team is working in collaboration with the Children’s Advocacy Center to conduct interviews and provide counseling for all of the children involved.

The man is currently being lodged in the Kent County Jail. At this time it is unclear what the charges are against him, though WOOD-TV8 reports that whatever that charge is is a felony.
