The city of Grand Rapids is working to get solar power to create 100% of the city's electricity.

According to WZZM, there are several city-owned locations not to mention the Butterworth Landfill location that could help Grand Rapids be running off renewable sources of energy over the next six years.

Here are a list of locations the city is looking at to potentially become renewable energy centers:

  • Grand Rapids City Hall
  • Grand Rapids Police Station
  • Lake Michigan Filtration Plant
  • Water Resources Recovery Facility
  • Market Avenue Retention Basin
  • Butterworth Landfill
  • Dash Lot 9
  • Bridge Street Fire Station

The city of Grand Rapids has partnered with SolSmart to use their experience in helping find the right locations and technology to make GR a green city faster and more efficient.

Through partnership with SolSmart and the city, the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewal Energy Laboratory completed an assessment of solar capabilities for the eight city facilities in July.

The city is also working with Consumers Energy to help achieve the city's energy goals.

The next six months in the plan are crucial to getting the Butterworth facilities back in order for solar power, plus the other seven facilities approved. Developing LED street strategies, a 100% renewable energy plan, provide options for the planning and city commissions, and develop a plan on carbon reduction initiatives.

There is a lot of work that will need to be done but when its done, Grand Rapids will be an even greater city to be a part of.
