'Tis the season for me to get irritated by the people in my neighborhood who have been shooting off fireworks and scaring my dog for the past two weeks.

The upside is that soon we will be within the window of are days when it is actually LEGAL to shoot off fireworks within the city limits. Not sure what your rights are when it comes to fireworks? Well, we found the info for you.

Here’s when you legally can shoot off fireworks within the city of Grand Rapids:

  • 8 a.m. to midnight July 3
  • 8 a.m. to midnight July 4
  • 8 a.m. to midnight July 5

Michigan state law in 2012 lifted a ban on “consumer fireworks,” the loud ones like firecrackers and ones that fly up into the air like bottle rockets.

So basically, if you live within the city of Grand Rapids it’s not legal to use loud, more powerful fireworks between midnight and 8 a.m. on July 3, 4, and 5. (Things like snakes and sparklers are still okay.)

The fine for breaking the laws associated with fireworks and getting caught is $500.
