‘Gilmore Girls’ Creators Making Time for Another Netflix Revival
The prospect of more Gilmore Girls got dimmer with creator Amy Sherman-Palladino signing onto new Amazon series, but some contractual fine print brings good news. A deliberate loophole could finally answer Rory’s big mystery with another season in the near future.
Keep in mind that Sherman-Palladino and husband Dan have not only signed to the two-season Marvelous Mrs. Maisel at Amazon and signed a subsequent deal for series beyond, but the Gilmore girls themselves have cast doubt on another revival. All the same, TVLine reports that the Sherman-Palladinos’ Amazon contracts were specifically formulated with “an ‘out’ clause” for future Gilmore seasons.
That said, the piece notes that said clause is only activated if the two move forward on a story idea and unravel the Gordian knot of putting that busy cast back together, so we wouldn’t put on a pot of coffee just yet. Back in June, star Lauren Graham was less-than-optimistic about a second revival, but at least open to a Christmas-themed return:
Just as an experience, it was kind of perfect. I always said, while we were doing it, that I couldn’t see more episodes in that form. Five years from now do you have ‘A Very Gilmore Christmas?’ Maybe, but there’s no reason anymore except enjoyment. And, actually, I think there’s far more risk to continue — you run the risk of disappointing people.
It took Arrested Development more than a few years to assemble its second revival, so might Sherman-Palladino end up exercising the Gilmore Girls “out” clause?
