This past weekend saw Netflix breaking with its traditional release strategy, to debut Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down in the first of multiple installments. That owed to chaotic production, but where Gilmore Girls bosses hoped to release the four Year in the Life revival specials in equal installments, Netflix believes fans “would’ve killed us” to break with tradition.

Per TVLine, Netflix boss Ted Sarandos explained that despite creator Amy Sherman-Palladino’s own request to break up the four-part release of her Gilmore Girls revival, now set for a November 25 premiere, fans wouldn’t have been too happy stifling their fervor:

If we would not have [released them] all at once the fans would’ve killed us … I’m petrified of those fans; they are so passionate.

One or two episodes of the 90-minute specials might have briefly tided over fans, though it’s Sherman-Palladino herself who previously hoped to break up the release, saying:

It’s such a journey and it’s such a build to the last four words… However, you don’t always get what you want. The good outweighs the bad in the sense that this is a wonderful place to create things and do things in a different way.

For his part, Sarandos expressed an almost-naive optimism that fans would manage to avoid spoilers from less-cautious viewers on Twitter, but given creator concerns, should Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life have at least tried spacing out its release?
