September 1, Labor Day, was the big day for Costco. They began enforcing a new policy that affects all members.

Actually, Costco announced earlier this summer that they were going to shake up store hours for all memberships, and now the new policy is in effect.

Beginning this past Tuesday, September 2, because they were closed on Labor Day, there is now a new "Executive Hour" of shopping for Executive Members only.

It's sort of a VIP hour for Executive Members, Newsweek.com says, where they can shop an hour earlier weekday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m., and a half an hour earlier on Saturday's from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Executive Member get to shop for that first hour without having to fight through heavier crowds which is a good perk for them.

Newsweek.com reported that Executive Members get extra perks and rewards, and Costco says that member is their most loyal and felt they needed to reward them.

Currently the Executive Member pays $130 a year for a membership while the Gold Star members pay $65 a year.

There was a loud outcry from Gold Star members. "Some customers said they felt alienated by the policy which favored its higher paying members," CNN reported.

But, not all Costco Members were upset. Newsweek.com reported that one person said: "Yesssss! I'll happily accept this extra hour!!!" And a another shopper wrote: "Nice added benefit to those with the Executive membership. Kudos! Hope to see more distinguishing benefits down the road."

And there is the other point that this is a pretty good idea to have Gold Star Members upgrade their memberships into an Executive Membership. Pretty crafty!
