It is so sad to have to write about another Grand Rapids favorite restaurant closing their doors.

Almost 20 years ago, The Green Well opened their doors in the East Hills neighborhood on Cherry Street, and was welcomed by all with an eclectic menu, funky vibe, and a welcoming feeling for all of us who walked through their doors.

Just a couple of years ago they reimaged themselves with a more modern decor and kept rolling.

Since the pandemic, the restaurant business has been in a bit of a struggle, and we have seen so many closings. New restaurants have been opening at the same time so all of us get to try some new foods and ideas, but it's always sad to lose a good friend.

Essence Restaurant Group, owners of the Green Well wrote in their announcement:

"After nearly two decades of serving the West Michigan community, we’ve made the difficult decision to close The Green Well on Cherry Street. As we approach the renewal of our lease, we have opted not to renew. The Green Well has been an amazing part of our story since it opened in 2007. It has become more than a restaurant—it’s been a gathering place, a neighborhood favorite and a cornerstone of the dining scene in West Michigan."

Essence owns three other popular restaurants in Grand Rapids, and say they will pour all of their focus into them, Bistro Bella Vita, Lucy’s and grove.

They have decided that their last day for the Green Well will be next Saturday, August 16.

For now, the Green Well is still open and welcoming all.

Thanks for the memories, Green Well!
