Celebration Cinema Theaters Close, But Pop-up Drive-ins Re-open

As new COVID-19 restrictions go into effect for the state of Michigan today, Celebration Cinemas and other theaters announced they’ll be closing as per the mandatory order from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Unfortunately, theaters in the state were only open for just over a month as they were forced to close in March at the beginning of the pandemic and were officially given the OK to re-open on October 9th. Back in September, WOOD-TV reported Celebrations Cinema management, backed by the Grand Rapids Mayor Bliss and a Kent County Commissioner all made a public push to open theaters and to prove that they are safer than a stadium for sporting events, but as cases of COVID-19 have increased across the state and country, unfortunately, they have been lumped in with the latest restrictions which aim to limit the number of people commingling to hopefully help slow the spread during this spike in positive cases.

That’s not completely stopping Celebration Cinemas though. As they announced their theaters closing for the next three weeks, they also announced that their pop-up drive-ins which are in the parking lots of Celebration Cinema North in Grand Rapids and the Celebration Cinema in Lansing, are open and showing movies. They also announced that the Getty Drive-in in Muskegon would re-open on November 25th.

Starting this week on Thursday night you can watch the movie ‘Freaky’, a comedy-thriller, starring Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton at both the GR and Lansing pop-up drive-in. Friday through Sunday you can see ‘The Santa Clause', with Tim Allen, as well as the new release ‘Van Guard’ starring Jackie Chan. They’ll be showing those two movies each night as a double feature.

Tickets for all three movies are on sale now at the Celebration Cinema's website. They also have other frequently asked questions regarding what happens to some previously purchased tickets or other promotions, like the C Rewards VIP memberships, now that the actual theater locations have been closed due to new COVID restrictions.
