Being able to go out to a nice restaurant for a wonderful meal is a real treat for all of us.

It's not only the food, but the service, ambiance, and the friendliness of the staff that makes it a truly wonderful experience.

That is what the oldest restaurant in Grand Rapids has been doing for 102-years. It has been serving food continuously since 1924. And, even though I haven't been a regular for all those years, some may argue that point, it is one of our favorite places to be.

The Cherie Inn, 969 Cherry St. SE, is this gem of a restaurant in Grand Rapids, and, yes, it is 102-years old.

Restaurants come and go. We have seen so many close this past year with just as many new ones opening hoping to survive this tough dining environment we have today.

So, it's amazing that one small restaurant keeps cooking away. Why? How?

Michael Kulczyk, owner for the past 25-years, says it's many things. Maybe it's the fresh flowers on each table, or the comfortable and cozy atmosphere, or the fabulous staff, including Michael, who always make you feel welcome, and will probably know your name after a couple of visits.

However, it truly is the food. It's always fresh, locally sourced and made from scratch every day. If you have eaten there you also know it has to be their famous eggs Benedict.

TV13 reported Michael said:

"We're famous for our eggs benedict. It's the best eggs benedict in the world. We take the time to make true hollandaise sauce that really is our secret.”

There also is so much history surrounding the building.

"Jay Van Andel was born upstairs," said Michael. “Gerald R. Ford met his biological father here. He didn't meet his biological father till he was 13. And in his biography, it says his dad asked him, 'Where would you like to meet Jerry?' And he said, 'at the Cherie Inn."

The Cherie Inn is open Wednesday through Sunday every week, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., serving breakfast and lunch.

TV13 wrote Michael said: “Everybody wants the Cherie Inn to stick around. If you keep coming, we'll keep cooking.”
