They were supposed to be here in March. And then in May. Are driverless shuttles finally here?

The shuttle, financed by May Mobility out of Ann Arbor, was scheduled to take over some of the DASH routes to the West Side starting in March, but delays in launching the service have officially pushed back the odd looking shuttles until late July.

But the City of Grand Rapids posted on their Facebook feed yesterday that the shuttles may already be driving around downtown in a test run.

The shuttles, although technically totally autonomous, will have a person on the drivers seat for safety reasons for the initial roll out.

I think if I'd have seen that weird looking thing, I would have remembered it, but I'll keep my eye out this weekend for the May shuttles. I just hope the May shuttles are friendlier to bikers than the DASH buses are now.
