18-Year-Old Grand Rapids Man Dies Following Officer-Involved Shooting
An 18-year-old man died Wednesday after being shot by a Grand Rapids police officer on the Southeast side.
The shooting occurred near Kalamazoo Ave. and Dickinson St. SE. The area was closed down for hours.
Family of the deceased man have identified him to WZZM-13 as Malik Carey.
The suspect was in a vehicle when police first encountered him. At some point, he fired at police and they returned fire.
Carey was taken to St. Mary's Hospital, where he later died. No officers were injured.
In an update Wednesday afternoon, Grand Rapids Police Sgt. Terry Dixon said Carey was a probation absconder.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave per department policy. The investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Michigan State Police.
