Astonishing! A 10-Cent Return Law for Plastic Water Bottles?
Plastic trash is a big, big problem here in Michigan and the United States.
Hopefully we are all recycling our plastic water bottles, but who knows what is actually happening to them after we recycle as so much seems to end up in our waterways.

The oceans and many natural lakes are full of plastic trash and something has to be done about it.
CAN ANYTHING BE DONE?
A Michigan State Senator, Sean McCann from Kalamazoo, wants to make a dent by requiring a 10-cent return law for plastic water bottles added on to the Michigan 10-cent bottle deposit law that we have had since December 3, 1978, 46 years ago.
Actually, he wants all other non-carbonated beverage containers included except for milk jugs and baby formula.
Our sister station, CARS 108, reported that McCann has introduced Senate Bill 1112. That would put the question on the ballot for all of us Michiganders to vote on in 2025. It would state that an amendment to Michigan deposit law would enhance recycling and reduce waste in our state. The legislature would have to pass it first before it does get on the ballot.
IT WORKED WHEN THE RETURN LAW WAS PASSED!
I do remember how, as the CARS 108 article mentions, so much trash and litter seemed to vanish after the bottle return law was passed. So, hmmm, maybe this would be good.
To spell it out, here is what the law would state:
"The bill would put a 10-cent deposit on all beverage containers one gallon or less, including water bottles. Milk jugs and baby formula containers would be exempt from the deposit law.
Retail establishments would have to accept all brands of bottles, regardless of whether they sell that particular brand or not."
Of course you realize that only Michigan purchased bottles can be returned, right?
What do you think? Yes? No?
