Surprise! Davenport University is Home to The #1 College Frisbee Team!
Frisbee, that wonderful family fun thing, is something my family, friends and I play in the back yard, and have for years. You'll find us tossing to kids and grandkids.
Kanjam Frisbee is cool and very fun and competitive and we do that a lot as well.
Of course there is frisbee golf and tons of people play that. I, myself, would rather be on a golf course hitting a little white ball with a stick, but that is me!
But who knew there actually are college teams competing in Ultimate Frisbee, and Grand Rapids has the nations number one Ultimate College Team in the United States.
Congratulation to Davenport University who will compete this weekend in the National Ultimate College Championship Tournament.
Ultimate College Frisbee is tough and competitive. You're not just slinging a typical frisbee around. You are competing against other teams on the field trying to score goals.
Don't quite get it? Picture a football, or soccer game, without any padding at all, or even a basketball game, when a team needs to move the frisbee down a 70-yard field into the end zone to score by tossing the frisbee. It is tough defense and offense, all the way down the field, but is considered a non-contact sport. If a player does hit an opposing player it is a foul and the thrower get the disk again for another toss.
Ultimate Frisbee is considered a club sport, but with more than 18,000 student-athletes competing on 800-plus teams, the college division is USA Ultimate’s largest according to USAUltimate.org.
