Homeless Man Returns Diamond Ring Mistakenly Dropped In His Change Cup

Diamond Ring

For a moment, homeless man Billy Ray Harris thought it was his lucky day.

When he looked down into his change cup after a round of panhandling he noticed something really shiny among the coins and bills. It was a diamond and platinum ring, and a “big one” at that.

But it didn’t take long for the Kansas City man to conclude the ring wasn’t meant for him, and rather it belonged to someone who had been kind enough to help him out with a contribution they thought was of a lot less value.

But who had mistakenly given him the ring?

It was Sarah Darling. She had put her engagement ring in her change purse because it was hurting her finger before forgetfully dumping all of her “change” into Harris’ cup.

When Darling approached Harris the next morning she didn’t know what to expect. She squatted down next to him and informed him “I might have given you something very valuable.”

“A ring?,” Harris responded, and then handed her back the jewelry.

“I think in our world we often jump to like the worst conclusion, and it just makes you realize that there are good people out there,” Darling said of the ease in getting back her ring from Harris.

For Harris, keeping the valuable was never an option.

“My grandfather was a reverend. He raised me from the time I was six months old and thank the good Lord, it’s a blessing, but I do still have some character,” he explained to KCTV.

Harris didn’t come away from the transaction completely empty-handed. In appreciation of his honesty, Darling left him with all the cash in her wallet.
