I'm guilty of it.  Keeping a bunch of crap in my wallet.  Some business cards of people met long ago.  Store "loyalty" cards (although a lot less than I used to carry).  Receipts from my credit card AND my bank/debit card.

What do you keep in your wallet?  Chances are you have at least a few things in there that shouldn't be...

According to Kiplinger's, here are 8 things that shouldn't be in your wallet.

  1. Social Security card and/or anything with your number on it.   (I think if you still have your SSN card or number anywhere on your person, you're an idiot.)
  2. Password cheat sheet. Think about it ... your ATM card is in your wallet, along with a list of PIN numbers and passwords.
  3. Spare keys. Again, think about it ... spare keys in the same place with your drivers license which has your address on it.  If you're not home, but your spouse or kids are...
  4. Checks. This is pretty obvious.  Aside from forging/writing a check on your account, the routing and account numbers are all someone really needs to get money out of the account.  (PS - who uses checks anymore, anyway?)
  5. Passport. Apparently this is a jackpot for ID thieves.  I had no idea.  They could use it to get a Social Security Card in your name or even TRAVEL in your name.  Scary.
  6. Several credit cards. The more you have, the more you have to cancel if they're stolen.  Also suggested is to keep a list of the cancellation numbers somewhere, so you don't have to waste time tracking them down if/when your stuff is stolen.
  7. Birth Certificate. Really?  People carry this with them?
  8. Receipts. This is one I'm really guilty of.  I keep a TON of receipts in my wallet until it's time to enter all the debits into my account and pay bills.  They say a good ID thief can use the card info and merchant info to dig deeper and find info needed to do harm.
